Samuel Gammon came from Mumbles, near Swansea, and was a husband and father of three young boys. He served with the Welsh Regiment during the First World War.
In the summer of 1916, his wife Gladys received a rosary from Samuel while he was serving in France. She arranged for a photograph of herself and their three children to be taken and sent to him.
Tragically, Samuel was killed during the fighting at Mametz Wood on 10 July 1916. It remains unknown whether he ever received that final photograph.
His youngest son, Frederick, was just a baby when his father died.
